If x Whether

"If" e "whether" significam "se" em inglês. A diferença é que se usa 'whether' quando se tem uma alternativa (expressa por 'or'). Por exemplo:

-  I don't know whether he told me truth or not. (Não sei se ele me falou a verdade ou não.)
- I'll definitely travel abroad next vacation, whether I have company or not! (Com certeza viajarei para o exterior nas próximas férias, se eu tiver companhia ou não.)


Nestes casos, poderíamos usar 'if' sem mudança no sentido da frase. 


Atenção: Não se usa 'whether' em orações condicionais. Exemplo:
- If it rains tomorrow, I won't go to the club. (Se chover amanhã, não irei ao clube.)
- If I hadn't studied for the test, I'd certainly have gotten a terrible grade. The test was so hard! (Se eu não tivesse estudado, eu teria tirado uma nota péssima. O teste estava tão difícil!)
